Defining machine learning
Machine learning is the science of applying computational algorithms to a system to generate decisions and predictions for real-world problems. It follows various techniques of pattern matching, probability and randomness and statistics in its main functions.
It came into limelight in the late 90s and has been playing an important role since that time. Although it was first introduced in 1959, it was stuck with artificial intelligence. It was not thought of as an independent domain that could have other applications, thereby changing the perception of technology.
Different types of learning algorithms
Machine learning works on two types of algorithms. The first category is the supervised algorithm while the second category is called the unsupervised algorithm.
In a layman language, supervision means when something is supervised or judged. Supervised algorithms follow this ideology. It consists of a set of correct answers called a label set. Thus, machines apply an algorithm to reach a known result.
Unsupervised algorithms are not based on such technology. The machine has no correct answer. The data is processed through it and it has to analyze and decide the answer itself.
Supervised or unsupervised, either way, machine learning algorithms prove to be an efficient way to solve problems and, thus, find their applications in many fields.
